Tata Steel UK has awarded a major contract to global crane manufacturer JASO Industrial Cranes as part of its GBP 1.25 bln (USD 1.69 bln) investment in sustainable steel production at Port Talbot. Under the agreement, JASO will supply seven high-capacity process cranes to support the upcoming Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility.
Set to be operational in 2028, the EAF is expected to cut carbon emissions at the site by 90pct, equivalent to five mln tons of CO2 annually. The equipment package includes 500-ton cranes for handling liquid steel ladles, two 80-ton scrap cranes feeding the furnace via an integrated conveyor, and two 35-ton cranes for electrode maintenance.
Tata Steel, which operates the UK’s largest steelworks at Port Talbot with a capacity of three mln tons per year and employs around 8,000 people across the country, is shifting from traditional blast furnace production to lower-emission EAF technology using locally sourced scrap. The move is a key part of its broader strategy to decarbonize operations and ensure long-term sustainability.
