Tata Steel plans to begin operations at its newly built electric arc furnace (EAF) facility in Ludhiana in March 2026, according to media reports citing Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The chief minister recently met a Tata Steel delegation to review progress on the project, describing it as a significant boost for Punjab’s industrial development. Hot trials at the Ludhiana facility have already commenced, according to the reports.
The plant will feature an EAF with a capacity of 0.75 mln tons per year, along with a rebar rolling mill to produce construction-grade steel under Tata Steel’s Tata Tiscon brand.
The Ludhiana project represents Tata Steel’s first major investment in Punjab and is expected to become the company’s second-largest facility in India, after its flagship plant in Jamshedpur.
The company said the plant supports its long-term target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, underpinned by a roadmap focused on process innovation, renewable energy use, circularity, and the adoption of breakthrough technologies.
Tata Steel is among the world’s leading steelmakers, with annual crude steel capacity of around 35 mln tons.
