Tata Steel UK has selected multinational construction and development company, Skanska to provide design and project management services for its new electric arc furnace (EAF) project in South Wales.
Under the agreement, Skanska’s Technology business will handle civil and structural design for key sections of the project, including building foundations, structures, site infrastructure, and drainage.
A dedicated technical team from Skanska will work on-site at Port Talbot alongside Tata Steel and main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine.
The new EAF, set to replace the site’s decommissioned iron and steelmaking facilities, will have an annual production capacity of three mln tons. Once operational by late 2027, it is expected to cut the site’s steelmaking carbon emissions by 90pct, equivalent to five mln tons of CO2 per year.
