Tata Steel UK awards civil works contract for Port Talbot pickling line project

Tata Steel UK has appointed Welsh contractor Morganstone to deliver the civil and structural works package for the new pickling line at its Port Talbot steelworks, marking the start of the main construction phase of Project Invictus, the company’s low-carbon steelmaking transformation programme.

Construction is scheduled to begin next week. The contract covers the installation of the process section of the new pickling line, including structural steelwork and foundations supporting the pickling and rinse tanks used to remove scale from steel during processing. Tata Steel said the equipment for the new pickling line is expected to begin arriving shortly as work progresses on the remaining civil and structural packages.

Tata Steel UK is a subsidiary of Tata Steel Group, which has an annual crude steelmaking capacity of around 34 mln tons. The company is currently transitioning Port Talbot to electric arc furnace-based steelmaking, with a new 3.2 mln tons per year EAF expected to start operations in 2028.
