Thyssenkrupp Steel is advancing construction of its direct reduction plant in Duisburg, Germany, with US engineering and project management firm Jacobs continuing to provide project management, construction management and assembly management services.
Jacobs was originally awarded the program and construction management contract in August 2023. Under the extended agreement, it will continue coordinating design, logistics and construction, while overseeing civil works, quality assurance, assembly logistics and material flows between contractors.
The hydrogen-capable plant is designed to produce around 2.5 mln tons of direct reduced iron (DRI) per year and will support Thyssenkrupp Steel’s transition from coal-based blast furnace production to hydrogen-based ironmaking.
Jacobs provides engineering, consulting and project management services for industrial, energy and infrastructure projects. In Germany, it is involved in energy transition, industrial decarbonization and critical infrastructure projects.
Thyssenkrupp Steel is Germany’s largest flat steel producer, serving the automotive, machinery, packaging and household appliance sectors. The company operates an integrated steelmaking network centered in Duisburg and produces hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated flat steel, electrical steel and tailored automotive blanks.
