Tokyo Steel cuts prices for October amid sluggish demand

Tokyo Steel, Japan’s leading electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker, has announced price cuts for October sales under its latest monthly policy.

For flat products, HRC (1.7-22 mm) and pickled and oiled coil (1.7-6 mm) will be reduced by JPY 3,000 (USD 20) per ton to JPY 86,000 (USD 586) and JPY 92,000 (USD 627) per ton, respectively. Coated coil (0.9-1.6 mm) prices remain unchanged at JPY 121,000 (USD 825) per ton.

In long products, rebar (13-25 mm) prices will fall by JPY 3,000 (USD 20) per ton to JPY 82,000 (USD 559) per ton, while H-beams see a sharper cut of JPY 12,000 (USD 82) per ton to JPY 100,000 (USD 682) per ton.

The company cited persistent uncertainty in overseas markets and oversupply from China’s sluggish property and manufacturing sectors. While government-led production cuts are expected to ease the imbalance, profitability pressures remain severe.

Domestically, construction activity is subdued, though inquiries for new projects, especially logistics facilities and redevelopment, are rising toward year-end. Market inventories are low, suggesting cargo movement could recover. Meanwhile, orders for machine tools and industrial machinery continue to support capital investment, but overall steel shipments remain sluggish.

Tokyo Steel said the revisions aim to align prices with current market conditions and support a market bottoming-out. The company pledged to adjust output in line with demand while closely monitoring global and domestic trends.
