Tosyali Algerie’s DRI II plant sets new productivity record

Tosyali Algerie’s DRI II plant produced 248,601 tons in May 2026, setting the highest-ever monthly production recorded by a single Midrex DRI plant, according to the company.

The company’s average productivity reached 334.1 tons per hour in May, surpassing the previous plant record of 328.6 tons per hour set in January. The plant also recorded zero downtime during the month.

Average productivity for January-May 2026 reached 316.9 tons per hour, exceeding both the plant’s 2025 annual average of 312.7 tons per hour and its design capacity of 312.5 tons per hour.

Tosyali Algerie’s DRI II plant was supplied by Midrex Technologies, together with Paul Wurth of SMS group, and can produce both hot and cold DRI. The company also set a world record for annual DRI production from a single direct reduction module, producing 2.43 mln tons in 2025 from DRI II during its first year of operation. The output ranked third globally in annual DRI production.

Tosyali Algerie is Africa’s largest integrated iron and steel complex, with annual liquid steel production capacity of more than 6 mln tons. Its operations include DRI, billet, rebar, wire rod and pipe production, while recently commissioned hot-rolled and cold-rolled flat steel facilities and ongoing galvanizing and automotive-grade steel projects form part of its Phase 4 expansion. The expansion is expected to raise total steelmaking capacity to 9.5 mln tons per year.
