U.S. Steel moves forward with new investments under Nippon Steel partnership

U.S. Steel’s Board of Directors has approved the next phase of capital investments, reinforcing its strategic partnership with Nippon Steel. The collaboration has already delivered efficiency gains across U.S. Steel’s North American Flat-Rolled, Big River Steel Works, and Tubular Products operations.

In Pennsylvania, U.S. Steel is seeking approval for an air construction permit to build a USD 100 mln slag recycler at its Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock. The facility will reduce waste and emissions while generating revenue by converting steelmaking byproducts into materials for cement production. Construction is expected to begin in 2026 following permit approval.

The Board also cleared a USD 200 mln investment to upgrade the hot strip mill at Gary Works in Indiana, U.S. Steel’s largest facility. The project will lower production costs and expand output of premium products such as heavy-gauge line pipe and automotive steel.

These initiatives are part of broader investments from Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel to modernize facilities, improve sustainability, and strengthen competitiveness.
