U.S. Steel has begun the process of restarting one of the two blast furnaces at its Granite City Works facility, following several months of assessing customer demand.
President and CEO David B. Burritt said the decision reflects strengthening order levels and is part of the company’s routine business planning. He noted that while the steel industry remains highly competitive and cyclical, U.S. Steel is confident in its ability to operate the mill safely and profitably to meet anticipated 2026 demand.
Founded in 1901, U.S. Steel operates across the U.S. and Central Europe. Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, completed its USD 14.9 bln acquisition of the company in June 2025.
