Voestalpine has received the core equipment for a new electric arc furnace (EAF) at its Linz steelworks, with the facility scheduled to start operation in the first half of 2027.
The equipment, manufactured in Germany, Italy and Turkey, arrived in several shipments, mostly by sea, with the components weighing a total of 790 tons. The equipment is now being installed and integrated at the site.
The new EAF will produce around 1.6 mln tons of steel per year once fully operational. Together with a new EAF at Voestalpine’s Donawitz site, the projects form the core of the company’s greentec steel programme.
The two furnaces are scheduled to begin operation in the first half of 2027 and will be gradually ramped up. Voestalpine expects the transition to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30 pct by 2029 compared with 2019, equivalent to almost 5 pct of Austria’s annual CO2 emissions.
Voestalpine is implementing the projects while maintaining production at its existing steelmaking facilities. The company said construction at both sites remains on schedule and within budget.
