Voestalpine is upgrading the Level 1 and Level 2 process control systems at its BETA 2 pickling line and tandem cold mill (PLTCM) in Linz, Austria, with Primetals Technologies implementing the software modernization. The project aims to enhance IT security, improve system availability, and align the facility with the latest automation standards, with commissioning scheduled for mid-2026.
The upgrade includes migrating to the latest Siemens PCS7 platform, integrating third-party packages into a unified control system, and moving process automation to updated Windows and Oracle environments. The BETA 2 line produces high- and ultra-high-strength steels for automotive, appliance, construction, and electrical steel applications.
As part of the modernization, automation systems will be integrated into Voestalpine’s virtualization environment to streamline maintenance and improve operational reliability across multiple production lines.
Voestalpine is a global leader in steel and technology, with operations in over 50 countries and a market-leading position in railway systems, tool steel, and special sections.
