WISCO enhances rail steel capabilities with new caster project

Wuhan Iron and Steel Co. (WISCO) has awarded Primetals Technologies a contract to supply a new six-strand bloom caster at its steelworks in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

The project forms part of WISCO’s strategy to optimize its production layout and strengthen its manufacturing capabilities in high-end steel applications, including rail steel, automotive steel and photovoltaic products.

Primetals Technologies will provide engineering, core equipment, automation systems and technical support for installation and commissioning of the caster.

The new facility is designed to enhance the production of high-quality rail steel through improved casting stability, steel cleanliness and bloom quality. According to Primetals Technologies, the project will help improve bloom surface and internal quality while increasing productivity and operational efficiency.

The caster will incorporate a range of advanced technologies, including mold and strand electromagnetic stirring systems, Dynacs 3D dynamic secondary cooling, DynaGap 3D dynamic soft reduction and the Quality Expert system.

The project is aimed at minimizing surface defects and internal cracks while delivering high-quality blooms for downstream processing.

WISCO, a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group, is one of China’s leading steel producers, with products serving sectors including automotive manufacturing, power infrastructure, engineering machinery and railway construction.
