Xiangtan Steel to upgrade heavy plate mill in Hunan

Xiangtan Iron and Steel, part of China’s Hunan Valin Group, selected Primetals Technologies to upgrade automation and thickness control systems at its heavy plate mill in Xiangtan, Hunan Province.

The project is aimed at improving plate flatness, thickness accuracy, production stability, and overall product consistency through the introduction of advanced automation solutions.

The modernization scope includes upgrades to process automation hardware and software, implementation of the Contour and Flatness Optimizer system, and automation controls for newly installed work roll bending equipment.

According to Primetals, the upgraded systems will improve rolling process control, particularly for thin-gauge plate production, while also increasing operational reliability and reducing maintenance risks associated with obsolete equipment.

The order follows previous modernization projects completed by Primetals at Xiangtan’s heavy plate facilities, including upgrades to a MULPIC cooling line.

Xiangtan Iron and Steel operates integrated steelmaking facilities in Hunan Province with annual steel production capacity of around 12 mln tons. The company also operates one of the world’s largest wide and heavy plate production bases, with annual output capacity of approximately 5 mln tons.
