SSAB to digitalize Lulea green steel mini-mill

SSAB Europe has commissioned PSI Software SE to implement PSImetals as a core element of its Green Steel transformation, supporting the digitalization and automation of its planned mini-mill in Lulea, Sweden.

The integrated production management solution will form the foundation of SSAB’s future manufacturing IT landscape, covering planning, scheduling, quality, production and logistics, with fully integrated Level-4 and Level-2 communication. At the Lulea site, PSImetals will manage all production areas, including the electric arc furnace, compact strip production, cold rolling mill and surface treatment lines, supporting both hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil output.

The project follows a comprehensive design phase that began in 2024 and aims to establish a scalable digital template for SSAB’s wider renewal program. By standardizing workflows and systems across sites, SSAB expects to reduce manual processes, streamline integration and achieve operational scale benefits across its Nordic and US operations.

The system will also deploy automated greenfield processes and best-practice functionality to improve planning accuracy, quality management and end-to-end logistics coordination. The digital platform is being developed to be fully operational ahead of the planned 2029 launch of the Lulea mini-mill.

SSAB is a global steel producer with a strong position in high-strength steels and low-carbon steel solutions. The company aims to largely eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from its own operations, with plans to start fossil-free steel production at its Oxelosund site in early 2027 using recycled steel and sponge iron.
