Tosyali Algerie sets global record in annual DRI production

Tosyali Algerie has set a new world record for annual direct reduced iron (DRI) output from a single direct reduction module, producing 2.43 mln tons in 2025 from its Module 2 during the unit’s first year of operation.

The company said its first DRI module also delivered a strong performance in 2025, ranking third globally in annual DRI production, underscoring the scale of Tosyali’s twin-DRI configuration in Algeria.

Module 2 was supplied by Midrex Technologies, together with Paul Wurth of the SMS group, and is capable of producing both hot and cold DRI, offering high operational flexibility. The module is also designed to operate on natural gas and, with minor modification, 100pct hydrogen.

Tosyali said the milestone reinforces its position as a leading green steel producer and supports Algeria’s growing role in global steel supply, strengthening domestic availability while enabling higher exports of value-added steel products.

Tosyali Algerie’s flat steel complex project includes a DRI plant, EAF, hot and cold rolling mills, and a galvanizing mill. Tosyali also produces rebar and wire rod with an annual capacity of 3.8 mln tons and operates a 400,000 tons per year helical submerged arc welding pipe mill in Algeria.
