Algeria is developing a 200-MW solar power plant in Tindouf province to support the Gara Djebilet iron ore project as part of its strategy to expand renewable energy use in the mining sector.
Construction of the solar facility began in March 2025 and is scheduled for completion within 24 months. The project, valued at over USD 147 mln, is being executed by China Geo-Engineering Corporation and will primarily supply electricity to the Gara Djebilet mine and its processing units. Power from the plant is also expected to support growing demand in Tindouf city and nearby industrial and logistics developments.
The solar project is intended to provide a stable, low-carbon power source for mining operations in the remote region, improving energy security while reducing reliance on conventional fuels, the government officials said.
Earlier this month, Algeria has launched the Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet mining railway, enabling initial iron ore shipments for processing and supply to the Tosyali steel complex.
The Gara Djebilet mine, located around 180 km southeast of Tindouf, holds estimated reserves of more than 3 bln tons of iron ore, making it one of Algeria’s most strategic mining assets.
