Turkish steel producer Habas has initiated the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for its planned cold rolling mill in the Aliaga district of Izmir, according to local media reports.
The company has submitted a project introduction file to the Izmir authorities, triggering regulatory review under Turkey’s environmental framework. The assessment will evaluate potential impacts on air emissions, water use, waste management and the surrounding ecosystem as part of the permitting process required before construction can proceed.
Under the plan, Habas will install a cold rolling mill integrated with a continuous pickling line and tandem cold mill. Once operational, the facility is expected to process around 1.82 mln tons of hot rolled flat steel per year, producing approximately 1.65 mln tons of cold rolled products for the automotive, construction and manufacturing sectors.
Last year, equipment supplier SMS group revealed that the mill will handle strip widths of 700-1,980 mm and thicknesses starting from 0.20 mm. Habas has also ordered several downstream lines, including an offline skin-pass mill, two continuous galvanizing lines, a recoiling and inspection line, and a tension levelling line, enabling production of advanced steel grades such as deep-drawing and high-strength steels.
Supporting facilities at the site will include acid regeneration, water preparation and wastewater treatment systems, as well as steam boilers and compressors. Land preparation has been completed, and construction work is underway, with the project targeted for completion within 12 months of receiving final permits.
Founded in 1956, Habas is one of Turkey’s major industrial groups and operates an integrated steel plant in Aliaga with an annual capacity of 4.5 mln tons, producing billets, rebar, wire rod and HRC
