Voestalpine Stahl GmbH has selected Primetals Technologies to modernize the laminar strip cooling line at its 5-mln-ton-per-year hot strip mill in Linz. The project builds on the long-standing cooperation between the two companies and aims to maintain the Linz HSM’s position at the forefront of rolling technology.
The upgrade is designed to increase cooling capacity to meet the requirements of the current product mix, particularly high-strength steels, while also supporting future grade development.
The scope includes the installation of new laminar cooling headers and flow-controlled valves for precise water management, along with new roller table side guides, water knives and a cross-spray system. The project also covers associated fluid systems as well as electrical and basic automation upgrades.
The modernization will enable flexible cooling strategies, ranging from mild to rapid cooling, using the same equipment. It is expected to deliver more uniform and metallurgically controlled strip cooling profiles, supporting the production of advanced steel grades, especially for automotive applications.
Implementation will take place during planned mill shutdowns of around 10 days each in 2027 and 2028, minimizing disruption to production.
Voestalpine is a global leader in steel and technology, with operations in over 50 countries and a market-leading position in railway systems, tool steel, and special sections.
