Severstal is upgrading the control system of reheating furnaces at its 350-bar mill at the Cherepovets Iron and Steel Works (CherMK), aiming to improve heating quality and environmental performance.
As part of the modernization, key components at reheating furnace No. 2, including pressure, gas and air flow sensors, temperature instruments and control systems, have been replaced with equipment supplied by domestic manufacturers.
The new automated control system enables more precise billet heating and better control of fuel combustion, helping to improve finished product quality while reducing gas consumption and emissions. The system also minimizes human error in furnace operations.
Severstal said it is also installing a similar system at reheating furnace No. 1, which will support a fully automated and more environmentally efficient production process.
Mill 350 produces a range of construction steel products, including rebar, angles, channels and round bars. The mill shipped around 500,000 tons of products in 2025.
Severstal is a leading vertically integrated Russian steel and mining company headquartered in Cherepovets. The group operates through two main divisions: Severstal Russian Steel, anchored by the Cherepovets Steel Mill, and Severstal Resources, which oversees its iron ore and coking coal mining assets in Russia.
