Algoma Steel, Roshel form JV for ballistic steel production

Canada’s Algoma Steel and Roshel Inc. have established a joint venture, Roshel Algoma Defence, to develop a Canadian-based centre of excellence for ballistic steel production.

The partnership aims to provide end-to-end domestic capabilities, including steelmaking, fabrication, forming, welding and machining, to support defence applications. The initiative aligns with Canada’s push to strengthen local supply chains and expand domestic defence manufacturing.

The JV will focus on supplying ballistic steel for military platforms such as light utility vehicles, as well as naval and broader defence applications. It also targets potential use in other sectors, including infrastructure, marine and aerospace, with export opportunities to allied markets.

Roshel Inc. is a Canadian manufacturer of advanced armoured vehicles, with headquarters in Brampton, Ontario, specializing in the design, production, and support of platforms for government, security, and commercial applications.

Algoma Steel, based in Sault Ste. Marie, is transitioning to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking and supplies hot- and cold-rolled steel to the automotive, construction, energy and defence sectors across North America.
