A Russian missile strike on August 16 damaged key production and energy facilities at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, forcing a partial halt to production at the Ukrainian steelmaker.
The company said the attack damaged facilities in the power generation and blast furnace sectors, affecting the plant’s core production processes. The company activated its emergency response plan, while technical teams began assessing the damage and determining the repair requirements.
The attack resulted in two fatalities and at least 14 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials and Reuters.
The extent of the damage and the timeframe for a full restart remain unclear. Production operations will depend on the condition of the damaged energy and blast furnace infrastructure and the progress of repair work.
The company said it is currently assessing the consequences of the attack and the options and timeframe for restoring operations.
The latest incident adds further pressure to Ukraine’s steel industry, which continues to face significant operational and logistical challenges due to the ongoing war. The strike follows a Russian attack on Metinvest’s Zaporizhstal on August 11, which damaged energy and production infrastructure and forced the integrated steelmaker to halt steel production.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is one of Ukraine’s major integrated steel producers, with operations covering iron ore mining and processing as well as steelmaking and long steel production.
