Tata Steel has issued the Final Acceptance Certificate for a coke-oven gas purification and hydrogen production system supplied by Canada’s PyroGenesis through its subsidiary Pyro Green-Gas at the Kalinganagar steel plant in India.
The certificate follows completion of a one-year operational liability and defects period, during which the system’s performance was monitored. It confirms that the system met the agreed contractual requirements and transfers responsibility for future operation to Tata Steel.
The system purifies 32,000 cubic meters of coke-oven gas per hour while extracting 620 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour at 99.999pct purity. The recovered hydrogen is reused in applications at the Kalinganagar facility.
Coke-oven gas is generated during the production of coke and contains hydrogen along with methane, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, tar, naphthalene and other hydrocarbons. Pyro Green-Gas’s system separates and removes contaminants before recovering high-purity hydrogen for reuse.
Tata Steel, part of the Tata Group, is one of the world’s leading steel producers with operations in India, the Netherlands, the UK and Thailand. The company has an annual consolidated crude steel capacity of 35.9 mln tons and plans to increase it to 51.5 mln tons per year by FY2030-31.
