Olympic Steel orders new cut-to-length line for Minneapolis facility

Olympic Steel, Inc. has placed an order with international technology group Andritz for a state-of-the-art cut-to-length line at its facility in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This new line will enhance Olympic Steel’s production capabilities and operational efficiency, with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025.

The cut-to-length line boasts impressive specifications, including a coil capacity of 0.135″ x 60″ wide x 60,000 lbs (~3.5 mm x 1,525 mm wide x 27 tons) and operates at 300 feet (91 m) per minute. It can handle yield strengths up to 80,000 PSI and process various materials, including cold-rolled, pickled and oiled, stainless, and coated steels.

Key features of the line include a heavy-duty precision leveler, a split leveler drive system for enhanced leveling performance, and a high-performance roll feed system for high accuracy. The production shear can cut at 60 sheets per minute, with inspection following the shear. The line also includes a reject stacking mode, an air float stacker, a weigh scale, and line safety fencing with gate interlocks, all meeting ANSI standards. The electrical panels are UL-certified for safety and reliability.

This advanced equipment will ensure Olympic Steel maintains high performance and repeatability in its operations, further cementing Andritz’s expertise in the metals processing industry.

Founded in 1954, Olympic Steel is a leading U.S. metals service center specializing in the direct sale and processing of carbon, coated sheet, plate, coil steel products, stainless steel, aluminum, pipe, tube, and other materials. The company is headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, with 49 facilities across the U.S.
