Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP), Indonesia’s largest privately owned steelmaker, has signed a landmark deal with Primetals Technologies, becoming Asia’s first steel plant outside China capable of producing zero-carbon HRC for the European market.
GRP will integrate Primetals Technologies’ Arvedi ESP concept, an innovative system that directly links casting and rolling in endless mode, enabling the production of ultra-thin gauges below 1mm. This technology will significantly reduce the need for cold-rolled coil in Indonesia. As part of its transition, GRP will also implement electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.
The Arvedi ESP system eliminates fossil fuel use, cutting direct greenhouse gas emissions to zero. Production is set to begin by 2027, doubling GRP’s output from 1.3 mln to 2.5 mln tons of low-carbon steel, with over 50pct targeted for the European Union. Primetals Technologies will supply a high-speed caster, a 3+5 stand rolling mill, and a full suite of electrical and automation solutions.
The technology offers superior quality and homogeneity, surpassing existing market solutions. Its environmental benefits include zero direct CO2 emissions, lower energy consumption, and the elimination of cold rolling and annealing. Additionally, advanced digital solutions and AI-driven automation will enhance operational efficiency, showcasing how IoT is transforming steel production in Asia.
