Algoma produces first steel from new EAF

Algoma Steel Group Inc. successfully produced its first steel from Unit One of its new electric arc furnace (EAF), marking a major step in the company’s transition to low-emission steelmaking.

The milestone follows over ten days of successful arc testing and calibration, including both individual and tandem trials of all nine Q-One transformer modules. The new EAF is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70pct, aligning with Algoma’s push toward greener steel production.

President and CEO Michael Garcia highlighted the achievement as the result of years of planning and disciplined execution since the project broke ground in November 2021.

The steel produced at the facility will be marketed under the brand name Volta, a nod to Alessandro Volta, pioneer of electricity. Powered by Ontario’s clean energy grid, Volta aims to support the growing low-carbon economy while helping customers meet sustainability goals.
