AM/NS India to launch new automotive steel production lines at Hazira plant

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is set to launch two advanced production lines this year dedicated to manufacturing automotive steel.

The new lines will replace imports of high-end steel used in the automotive sector, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. All products will meet the quality standards of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, with some products being produced in India for the first time.

The new Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) and Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line (CGAL) will be fully operational in 2025 at the Cold Rolling Mill 2 (CRM2) complex in Hazira, Gujarat. These facilities will produce steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa, in both coated and uncoated forms, under the brands of both parent companies. This builds on AM/NS India’s success with Optigal and Magnelis introduced last year.

The expansion aims to meet India’s growing demand for high-quality automotive steel, currently at 7.8 mln tons per year and projected to grow by 6-7pct annually.

AM/NS India, with a crude steel capacity of 9 mln tons annually, is a leading integrated producer of flat carbon steel and value-added steel in India.
