ArcelorMittal has successfully started up a new greenfield meltshop at its Calvert facility in Alabama, following its recent acquisition of Nippon Steel Corporation’s 50pct stake in the former AM/NS Calvert joint venture. Now operating as ArcelorMittal Calvert, the site has a total flat-rolled steel capacity of 5.3 mln tons per year.
The newly commissioned meltshop, supplied by Sarralle, is a state-of-the-art steelmaking facility designed to produce 1.5 mln tons of steel annually to serve North America’s automotive and industrial markets.
Key equipment provided by Sarralle includes a 180-ton DC electric arc furnace, a 180-ton twin ladle furnace, a material handling system capable of feeding pre-reduced materials to the EAF, a latest-generation fume treatment system, a statcom system to meet stringent power grid standards and additional auxiliary systems.
The meltshop is also equipped with a Ruhrstahl Heraeus (RH) degasser and a continuous casting machine, enhancing its high-quality steel production capabilities.
