ArcelorMittal partners with US startup to electrify industrial heat in steelmaking

ArcelorMittal has invested in Electrified Thermal Solutions through its XCarb Innovation Fund, backing the company’s breakthrough technology that electrifies industrial heat generation.

Developed at MIT, Electrified Thermal’s Joule Hive Thermal Battery (JHTB) stores renewable electricity as heat in conductive firebricks at temperatures up to 1,700 Celsius, providing a clean alternative to fossil fuel-based thermal energy widely used in steelmaking.

A 1MW/5MWh demonstration plant is under construction in Texas, with commissioning slated for late 2025.

Alongside the investment, ArcelorMittal signed an MoU with Electrified Thermal to test the technology at its GasLab facility in Spain and explore pilot deployments across its operations.
