ArcelorMittal units in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and Spain have joined the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS), following ArcelorMittal Germany’s founding membership in 2024. ArcelorMittal Belgium CEO Frederik Van De Velde has also joined the LESS board.
LESS, a voluntary initiative promoting industrial decarbonization, now includes producers representing nearly 45pct of Europe’s steel output, signaling growing momentum for a common low-emission steel label.
ArcelorMittal sold 400,000 tons of its low-emission XCarb steel in 2024, with further growth expected.
Despite these developments, ArcelorMittal notes that large-scale decarbonization projects are progressing more slowly than planned due to lagging policy and market conditions. Current investments include a new EAF in Gijon and an expansion at Sestao, Spain, both aimed at scaling up production of XCarb low-emission steel, the company said.
