ArcelorMittal supplies low-carbon rebar for Hamburg’s metro project

ArcelorMittal is supplying CO2-reduced reinforcing steel for Hamburg’s new U5 underground line, the company announced in a press release.

The U5 line will link the city center with eastern and western districts and is designed to be one of the most climate-friendly transport infrastructure projects in Germany. Project developer Hamburger Hochbahn AG and its subsidiary HOCHBAHN U5 Projekt GmbH are prioritizing carbon reduction throughout construction, including emissions from the entire building materials supply chain.

ArcelorMittal is providing 1,100 tons of its XCarb “recycled and renewably produced” rebar, manufactured using an electric arc furnace powered entirely by renewable energy. The steel is made from recycled material and emits only around 300 kg of CO2 per ton, an 88pct reduction compared to the 2,570 kg per ton associated with conventional blast furnace steel. These savings are certified through an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
