ArcelorMittal to shut Hamilton wire drawing plant as part of restructuring

ArcelorMittal Long Products Canada (AMLPC) has announced a restructuring of its wire drawing operations to enhance competitiveness and ensure long-term profitability, particularly in the telecommunications, construction, and automotive sectors.

As part of the plan, all wire drawing activities will be consolidated at the company’s Montreal site, resulting in the permanent closure of the Hamilton, Ontario wire drawing mill in the coming weeks. The company stated this move will help meet performance targets in the highly competitive long steel products market.

The closure will impact 153 employees. AMLPC said it is committed to supporting affected workers and will maintain open dialogue with employee representatives.

AMLPC, a major steel producer with over 2,000 employees across Quebec, manufactures semi-finished steel products including billets, slabs, bars, and wire rod. With an annual capacity of over two mln tons, it is also Quebec’s largest recycler of scrap metal, processing nearly one mln tons annually.
