BHP’s iron ore production up 1pct in H1 FY25 YoY

BHP Group reported a slight increase in iron ore production for Q2 FY25, ending 31 December 2024. The company produced 73.1 mln tons, up 1pct YoY and 2pct compared to the previous month. For H1 FY25, production rose 1pct YoY to 131 mln tons.

The increase was driven by strong supply chain performance, with record volumes from the Central Pilbara hub following the ramp-up of South Flank in FY24 and a 9pct rise in productive movement across the asset. Improvements from a port debottlenecking project, completed in 2024, enhanced car dumper cycle times and ship loader performance. These gains were slightly offset by increased tie-in activities for the Rail Technology Program and wet weather in December.

BHP maintained its iron ore production forecast for Western Australia at 282-294 mln tons, expecting to reach the higher end of this range. The company also anticipates meeting the upper half of its 2025 guidance for its BMA operations in Central Queensland, the New South Wales Energy Coal division, and the Samarco joint venture with Vale.

“We are well positioned to sustain strong momentum into the second half, with several assets expected to deliver at the upper end of their ranges while maintaining tight cost control,” said BHP CEO Mike Henry.
