British Steel opens new service centre to support forklift truck mast industry

British Steel has opened a new GBP 26-mln (USD 32 mln) service centre at its Special Profiles business in Skinningrove, Northeast England. This investment positions the company as a leading global supplier to the forklift truck mast industry.

The new facility will support the production of both standard and bespoke forklift mast profiles, helping British Steel capitalize on global growth opportunities. It is expected to significantly increase throughput over the next two years.

The service centre will primarily serve the high-reach forklift market, requiring precise tolerances for mast sections. These vehicles, used to lift loads in warehouses, operate at heights up to 8 meters, demanding high accuracy in the components.

The centre is equipped with advanced machinery, including four new CNC lathes, three automated bandsaws, a laser measurement system, and a large-capacity milling machine with a 14-meter bed. This cutting-edge technology enables British Steel to meet customer specifications with tight tolerances.

The Skinningrove site, in operation for over 150 years, remains a key manufacturing hub for British Steel.
