British Steel secures rail supply deal with Network Rail

British Steel has signed a new GBP 500-mln (USD 679 mln), five-year contract with Network Rail, reaffirming its role as the UK’s principal rail supplier. The deal includes an option for a three-year extension and ensures continued supply of rail manufactured at British Steel’s Scunthorpe facility.

Under the agreement, British Steel will deliver 70,000-80,000 tons of rail annually, enough to stretch from London to Edinburgh. The rails will primarily support maintenance, and renewal works across Britain’s rail infrastructure.

This long-standing partnership builds on over two decades of collaboration. In the last 10 years alone, British Steel has supplied more than one mln tons of rail to Network Rail.

The new contract also includes two key innovations: HP335 (HPrail), a high-performance rail designed to reduce wear, grinding, and life cycle costs; and Zinoco, a corrosion-resistant rail for harsh environments such as tunnels, coastal areas, and level crossings. Zinoco’s growing demand recently prompted an expansion in production capacity.

To support this deal, British Steel has also invested in a rail stocking facility at its Scunthorpe site, helping to ensure reliable, on-demand delivery for Network Rail’s supply chain needs.
