Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi launches advanced rolling mill at Riesa facility

Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi has successfully commissioned its new rolling mill, Walzwerk B, in Riesa, Germany.

Featuring the latest technologies, the mill connects directly to an existing continuous caster via a 300-meter hot-charge roller table, eliminating the need for gas heating and reducing direct CO2 emissions through induction heating.

The facility enables endless rolling with a sixth-generation billet welder that joins billets head-to-tail, improving efficiency and cutting maintenance times by half.

The mill comprises 16 housingless stands, a six-pass multidrive finishing block, and a spooler line. Its spooler produces twist-free deformed bar coils ranging from 8 to 25 mm in diameter, with coil weights of up to 8 tons, the heaviest bar coils of their kind worldwide. A multistage soft quenching process further improves metallurgical uniformity, outperforming conventional re-coiling methods.
