Emirates Steel, part of EMSTEEL Group, and Modon have signed an MoU establishing Modon as the first developer in the UAE to use low-carbon steel. This collaboration aligns with the UAE’s Net-Zero 2050 Strategy, aiming to decarbonize the construction industry by introducing green steel made with certified renewable hydrogen from EMSTEEL’s and Masdar’s pioneering green hydrogen pilot project, the first of its kind in the MENA region.
Saeed Alghafri, CEO of Emirates Steel, highlighted the partnership’s role in advancing the UAE’s decarbonization goals. “With our green hydrogen pilot project, we are laying the groundwork for large-scale green steel production, contributing to the UAE’s net-zero strategy and hydrogen economy targets. As the first global steelmaker to capture CO2 emissions and the first in MENA to use green hydrogen for steel production, we believe this partnership with Modon will further scale decarbonization efforts,” he said.
The UAE’s real estate sector has increased its focus on sustainable practices, including the adoption of green building regulations like Abu Dhabi’s Estidama Pearl Rating System. The National Green Certificates Program, launched by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in 2024, promotes the use of sustainable materials such as green steel to support these initiatives.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Steel has a production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement annually. The group exports to over 70 markets, accounting for 30pct of its sales. The company offers a diverse range of steel products, including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections, and sheet piles.
