EMSTEEL Group, one of the region’s largest listed steel and building materials producers, has launched TrueGreen, a strategic sustainability identity that consolidates its decades of decarbonization initiatives under one banner. The platform sets new standards for transparency and accountability in low-carbon steel production.
The launch follows several milestones: becoming the first MENA company to secure ResponsibleSteel certification, piloting the world’s first electric process gas heaters in steelmaking, and advancing projects such as carbon capture with ADNOC’s Al Reyadah and a hydrogen-based steelmaking pilot with Masdar. These efforts are already delivering results, most notably enabling EMSTEEL’s low-carbon rebar to be used in Abu Dhabi’s first net-zero carbon mosque on Yas Island.
Through TrueGreen, EMSTEEL provides developers, contractors, and financiers with internationally recognized sustainability credentials to meet emissions targets, strengthen bids for green tenders, and comply with measures like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Every TrueGreen product comes with independently verified EPDs and digital tracking systems offering batch-specific carbon data.
With an emission intensity of just 0.67 tons of CO2 per ton of steel, well below the global average, TrueGreen supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy and NDC 3.0 goals to cut built-environment emissions by 79pct by 2035. EMSTEEL’s leadership in decarbonization has already been recognized globally, including its designation as a Steel Sustainability Champion, ranking among the world’s top five steelmakers for decarbonization, and co-chairing the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization led by IRENA.
Looking ahead, EMSTEEL plans to expand TrueGreen’s impact through collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT), the Emirates Green Building Council, and international certification bodies to advance low-carbon construction worldwide.
Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, EMSTEEL has a production capacity of 3.5 mln tons of steel and 4.6 mln tons of cement annually. The group exports to over 70 markets, accounting for 30pct of its sales. The company offers a diverse range of steel products, including wire rod, rebar, heavy sections, and sheet piles.
