Fagersta Stainless, a leading stainless steel producer and part of the Marcegaglia Group since 2023, has selected Danieli technologies for key product-expansion initiatives at its facility in Fagersta, Sweden. These upgrades will be implemented on a Danieli mill originally supplied in 1984.
The first phase of the project includes the installation of a new bar-in-coil line, designed to produce not only round bars but also square and hexagonal profiles. The line will start with 8.5 and 8.8 mm diameter bars in 1-ton coils, operating at a capacity of 35 tons per hour.
Constructed on a plancher, the new line will receive hot-rolled bars from the existing rolling mill that also supplies the wire rod line. It will utilize the wire rod mill’s finishing services for coil compacting and tying.
To ensure seamless integration and operational efficiency, two new Morgardshammar housingless stands, identical to those currently used in the rolling mill, will be installed. These will take advantage of existing cartridges, spare parts, and operator expertise.
A custom-engineered, high-speed transfer system will deliver hot coils from the Garrett coilers into a water tank for solubilization, ensuring a uniform microstructure. This will be achieved using an innovative, energy-efficient process that reduces energy consumption and lowers carbon emissions.
The line’s layout is designed with future scalability in mind, allowing for increased productivity of up to 50 tons per hour and a doubling of coil weight capacity.
This investment will enable Fagersta Stainless to expand its product range with top-tier quality, enhance production flexibility, and optimize manufacturing costs.
Hot commissioning is planned for the first quarter of 2026.
