Feralpi Stahl and Juwi explore regional wind project to support green steel production

Feralpi Stahl, part of Italy’s Feralpi Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding with renewable energy developer Juwi to assess the feasibility of a regional wind energy project that could supply renewable power to Feralpi’s steel plant and rolling mills in Riesa. If implemented, the project would support the company’s long-term goal of emission-free steel production while strengthening regional value creation and boosting local acceptance of renewable energy.

Juwi, which has operated a wind and solar development branch in Brandis since 2011, and Feralpi Stahl are jointly studying how renewable energy can reduce CO2 emissions from steelmaking. The Feralpi Group aims to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Initial wind projects in neighboring Mittelsachsen are planned for commissioning by 2029.

Feralpi Stahl may participate as an investor, subject to project viability. The two planned wind farms would comprise five and six turbines respectively, with each turbine expected to generate around 20 mln kWh annually.

The Feralpi Group is one of Europe’s leading steel producers, supplying both construction and specialty steel markets.
