Future Forgeworks, a Brisbane-based steel manufacturer, has commissioned SMS group to supply Australia’s first Continuous Mill Technology (CMT 350) mill for its Swanbank Green Steel Mill Project. The facility will produce rebar using an endless process, ensuring low carbon emissions and high efficiency. Pending regulatory approvals, construction is set to begin in early 2025, with the first bar expected within 24 months and full completion by late 2027.
The new mill aims to meet growing demand for sustainable construction materials. CMT technology enables energy-efficient steelmaking by directly feeding liquid steel into a high-speed caster, which then supplies the rolling mill. This eliminates the need for a traditional fossil fuel-fired reheating furnace, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 30pct compared to conventional rebar mills.
SMS group will supply the entire plant, including an electric arc furnace designed for efficiency and emissions reduction, along with a fume treatment plant, ladle furnace, caster, and a rolling mill with a 350,000-ton annual capacity. The TBK REBARgauge laser measurement system will ensure precise production quality by detecting dimensional anomalies in real time, minimizing waste.
Additionally, SMS Elotherm’s inductive heating furnaces will reheat steel billets using green electricity. The CMT mill will be fully digital-ready, allowing seamless integration with advanced digital systems.
