The Secretary of State for Business and Trade has accepted the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA)’s recommendation to revoke the safeguard measure on Category 2 steel products, including non-alloy and alloy cold-rolled steel sheets, according to a statement from the regulator.
The TRA initiated a review after Tata Steel UK (TSUK) requested discontinuation of the measure. TSUK argued that its decision to cease cold-rolled steel production constituted a lasting change in circumstances, making it unlikely to face serious injury if the safeguard was removed. As the sole domestic producer of cold-rolled steel, TSUK’s withdrawal from production reduced the need for protective measures.
During the review, interested parties were invited to comment, with all feedback supporting the proposed revocation. The TRA noted that continuing the safeguard could lead to higher costs for downstream consumers and upstream stockholders.
An anti-dumping measure on cold-rolled flat steel imports from Russia and China remains in effect, the TRA confirmed.
