Hyundai and Posco strengthen ties with focus on U.S. steel expansion

Hyundai Motor Group and Posco Group have deepened their collaboration with a strategic focus on steel, aiming to enhance global competitiveness and secure supply chains in North America.

Under the agreement, Posco will invest in Hyundai’s upcoming USD 5.8 bln Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) integrated steel mill in Louisiana. Scheduled to begin operations in 2029, the facility will have an annual capacity of 2.7 mln tons of HR and CR steel, specifically tailored for next-generation automotive applications.

The mill will play a critical role in supporting Hyundai’s U.S. production facilities, Metaplant America in Georgia, the Montgomery plant in Alabama, and Kia’s Autoland Georgia, by ensuring a steady supply of high-quality automotive-grade steel.

The partnership also positions Posco for a strategic foothold in the U.S. steel market while advancing shared goals around low-carbon steel production, safety, and operational resilience.

Beyond the Louisiana project, the collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to bolstering supply chain security and maintaining competitiveness in the evolving automotive and steel industries.
