Hyundai Steel secures major supply deal with GM Korea

Hyundai Steel has signed a deal to supply GM Korea with approximately 100,000 tons of automotive steel annually starting in the second half of 2025. This marks a shift from GM Korea’s previous supplier, China’s Baoshan Iron & Steel.

Previously hesitant to partner with Hyundai Steel due to its ties with rival Hyundai Motor Group, GM Korea’s move reflects a strategic effort to diversify its supply chain amid ongoing U.S.-China trade tensions. The steel will be used in export models like the Trax Crossover and Trailblazer, primarily shipped to the U.S.

This agreement makes GM Korea Hyundai Steel’s largest external customer from a single plant and aligns with Hyundai Steel’s goal of reducing reliance on Hyundai Motor and Kia. The company plans to grow its sales to non-affiliated global automakers from 10pct to 20pct.
