Primetals Technologies has secured a contract from JSW Steel’s Salem Works in Tamil Nadu, India, to implement advanced process optimization solutions as part of a major digitalization upgrade. The project includes Level 2 automation systems for the meltshop and casting areas, aimed at boosting production consistency, product quality, and operational efficiency while reducing costs.
The scope includes automation for the entire meltshop: four ladle furnaces (LF), two vacuum degassers (VD), two energy optimization furnaces (EOF), and two 3-strand bloom casters. These systems will support autonomous operations, reduce manual intervention, and stabilize production through advanced metallurgical models and dynamic process control.
An intuitive interface with guided operator support ensures consistent and repeatable results, using standardized workflows and real-time calculations of key parameters such as steel grade, slag composition, and temperature.
JSW Steel is one of India’s top integrated steel producers, with an annual crude steel capacity of 35.7 mln tons. Its Salem Works facility is the country’s largest special alloy steel plant, producing over 850 specialty grades for bar and wire rod applications with a capacity of 1 mln tons per year.
