Kar-Demir cuts energy use in billet production with advanced technology

Turkish steelmaker Kardemir Celik (Kar-Demir) has reduced energy consumption in billet production by 15-30pct using the Furnace Energy Saving System & Continuous Charging (FESCON) technology at its Aliaga meltshop, according to local media reports. This facility specializes in producing billets from scrap metal using an electric arc furnace (EAF).

The FESCON technology, developed by Turkish engineering firm GEMKOM based in Kocaeli, has been instrumental in achieving these savings.

Kar-Demir board member Ozlem Bakirel stated, “At our Izmir Aliaga facility, we utilize two unique systems, basket heating and FESCON. Unlike similar facilities in Turkey, the FESCON method reduces energy loss by 15-30pct. We are proud to be among the few companies globally to employ this system, which was developed by Turkish engineers.”

In line with its sustainability goals, Kar-Demir has accelerated green energy investments to reduce environmental impact and energy dependency. In October, the company commissioned a 4 MW solar power plant, bringing its total energy generation capacity to 24 MW, including its Bozyaka wind power plant. Kar-Demir plans to further enhance its competitiveness by building additional power plants, increasing capacity, and diversifying its product portfolio, Bakirel added.

Kar-Demir operates seven production facilities with a total annual capacity exceeding 2.5 mln tons of long products, including billet, rebar, wire rod, and profiles.Kar-DemirKardemir operates seven production facilities with a total annual capacity exceeding 2.5 mln tons of long products, including billet, rebar, wire rod, and profiles.
