Kardemir Celik secures support to accelerate green transformation

Turkish steel producer, Kardemir Celik has secured support from the İzmir Development Agency (IZKA) under its “Industrial Green Transformation” programme, ranking first among selected companies.

Under the programme, the company will receive comprehensive assistance including training, current-state analysis, strategy development, roadmap preparation, consultancy and project development aimed at accelerating its sustainability transformation.

The company, which employs more than 1,350 people and operates seven production facilities while exporting to over 100 countries, said the initiative will strengthen its ongoing sustainability efforts.

Kardemir board member Ozlem Bakirel noted that green transformation has long been a strategic priority for the company, with investments spanning R&D, renewable energy projects, energy efficiency and carbon footprint measurement.

The firm operates an electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking facility in Aliaga that produces billet from scrap and incorporates waste heat recovery, enabling energy savings of around 15-30pct. Its renewable energy capacity currently stands at 24.7 MW, including wind, solar and waste-heat power generation, with plans to increase this to 52.1 MW through additional projects.

Kardemir Celik currently operates seven production facilities in Turkey, producing billet, rebar, wire rod, and profiles with a combined annual capacity of over 2.5 mln tons.
