Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has announced provisional anti-dumping duties on coated steel imports from China and South Korea, following an investigation into the impact of these imports on domestic manufacturers.
Chinese exporters will face preliminary tariffs of 37.13pct, while South Korean exporters will be subject to duties of 15.67pct. Specific rates include a 13.7pct tariff on coated steel imports from Hyundai Steel, with the standard 15.67pct applying to other Korean producers. Posco, Dongbu, and Dongkuk Coated Metal have been exempted. Among Chinese companies, major producers such as Baosteel and its subsidiaries are included in the tariff list, while Boxing Hengrui New Material and Yieh Phui (China) have been exempted.
The investigation was initiated in response to a petition by five major Vietnamese steelmakers: Hoa Sen, Nam Kim, Ton Phuong Nam, Ton Dong A, and China Steel & Nippon Steel Vietnam.
According to customs data, coated steel imports of the investigated goods reached 454,000 tons in the 12 months ending March 2024, an increase of 91pct compared to the same period the previous year. Despite the ongoing investigation, imports continued to rise. In the last nine months of 2024 alone, imports totaled approximately 382,000 tons, up 20pct YoY, the Ministry reported.
