Nippon Steel moves ahead with record-capacity EAF investment at Kyushu Works

Nippon Steel has selected Tenova to supply a new Consteel electric arc furnace (EAF) for the Yawata area of its Kyushu Works, marking a major step in the company’s transition toward low-carbon steelmaking. Tenova will deliver the project in partnership with GE Vernova, which will provide its Direct Feed power system.

Once commissioned, the furnace will be the world’s most powerful EAF, with a heat size of 340 tons. The high power capacity will allow the use of larger volumes of virgin iron units, supporting the production of high-quality steel grades. GE Vernova’s Direct Feed system will supply the stable, high-intensity power required for the installation.

The Yawata project forms part of Nippon Steel’s long-term decarbonization strategy and its roadmap toward carbon neutrality by 2050. It also aligns with Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) Promotion Act, supporting the shift from blast furnace operations to electric arc furnace steelmaking.
