Japanese shipping firm, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and the Port of Duqm Company (PODC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration on the development and connectivity of Oman’s Port of Duqm, with a particular focus on supporting the emerging green steel and hydrogen industries.
Located outside the Strait of Hormuz, the Port of Duqm offers strategic access to markets in the Middle East, India, and East Africa. The area’s designation as the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) and its strong renewable energy potential, especially in green hydrogen production, position it as a future hub for low-carbon steelmaking and energy exports.
The port is actively promoting direct reduced iron (DRI), a key input for green steel, alongside projects for hydrogen and ammonia production using wind and solar power.
Through this partnership, NYK Line and PODC will explore cooperation in supporting green steel industry logistics, alternative solutions for vehicle transportation, and the production and maritime transport of green energy.
