Outokumpu, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boston Metal to accelerate the development of carbon-free metals for industries such as defense and aerospace.
The partnership will focus on using Outokumpu’s high-quality chromium in Boston Metal’s Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE) technology, aimed at improving recycling, efficiency, and circularity within Outokumpu’s operations.
Outokumpu will supply chrome-oxide and chromium feedstock from its Kemi mine in Finland to support the production of MOE’s inert anode, a critical component for green steelmaking. Boston Metal’s MOE technology electrifies metals production, eliminating carbon emissions and enabling a zero-carbon pathway when paired with renewable energy.
The company is commissioning its first commercial plant in Brazil for high-value critical metals, while simultaneously scaling the modular technology for steel production.
